Ohio Utica Shale Well Status Graph Highlights Trends

A chart of Ohio Utica Shale Well Status by month highlights drilling downturn, production buildup, and drilled backlog.

Wells and well status over time in Ohio's Utica Shale

Key takeaways

The velocity of wells entering production has declined somewhat
While wells entering production has slowed, according to the EIA, Utica Shale Production continues to increase month over month. See related post Utica Shale - Net Gas Production Soaring Past Others. And while the EIA Utica Shale report includes more than just Ohio, Ohio is the main contributor.

Drilling has tapered, though still above 2014 levels... so far.
And while wells classified as drilling  peaked near the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015, drilling activity is still just above activity this time last year, though that will change if the drilling decline continues at the current rate.

Increasingly, drilled wells are awaiting production
At the same time as drilling began to slow, wells classified as drilled but not yet producing has increased. This trend is likely due to operators awaiting more favorable gas prices or they negotiating with service providers and holding out for discounts on completion services required to bring wells under production, all most likely related to economics.

Inventory of wells permitted remains steady
A healthy pipeline of wells ready to drill has maintained, indicating the under favorable economics the wells will be ready to drill.

Utica Shale Ohio Q1 2015 Gas Production by County

Four times a year we are treated to a new set of Utica Shale production data out of the Ohio DNR. With each report we gain more insight into a number of things. In this post I will look a gas production by county.

Gas Production by County Q1 2015 vs. Q4 2014

Data extracted from Ohio DNR production reports

Immediately what stands out is that the lower producing counties have mostly dropped in natural gas production while the top six higher producing counties have all gained in production from quarter to quarter.

Minus the one well in Coshocton county, more marginal counties are all in a decline. And while the number of producing wells is similar from quarter to quarter in these more marginal counties, inevitable decline rates will continue to reflect lower production if no new wells are drilled in the counties.

In addition, producing days and wells producing are up, more of an indication that, though slowing somewhat recently, more wells are coming online in the most prolific gas producing counties.

On the plus side, Guernsey and Noble counties showed the largest increases in natural gas production quarter to quarter, also reflected in increased numbers of wells brought into production.

Another observation to be made is that Belmont and Monroe counties are bringing in relatively higher natural gas production per well as demonstrated by sum of producing days compared to others. Indications are that wells drilled in these counties are relatively more profitable, though that would depend on how early the respective wells are in their production curve relative to wells in other counties. It is no surprise then, according to Ohio DNR permit activity, that Belmont and Monroe counties lead in wells classified as drilling in May 2015.

Utica Shale - Nat Gas Production Soaring Past Others

Steep natural gas production increase continues
The latest report from the U.S. Energy Information on the Utica Shale (combined Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia production) continues to show a dramatic rise in natural gas production from the Utica. And the Marcellus Shale is in a class of its own, with production nearly equal to the next four combined. The diagram below, excluding the Marcellus in order to show relative scale amongst the other top natural gas producers by rank, illustrates the steep natural gas production increase from the Utica.

Data from eia.gov, retrieved May 14, 2015.

Abbreviated YOY data from the top six natural gas producers (including the Marcellus)

Data from eia.gov, retrieved May 14, 2015.

Utica ranked 6th in U.S in natural gas production, soon to be 5th
The Utica Shale is ranked 6th in monthly natural gas production, having taken the number 6 spot from the Woodford in November 2014. And while most of the shale natural gas plays showed steady or slightly declining year over year production, only the Eagle Ford, Utica, and Marcellus shales showed a relatively steep increase. And with the near leveling of the Fayetteville the Utica should pass the Fayetteville in total monthly production in June of this year. After that, the Haynesville should be the next to be overtaken the Utica Shale in monthly natural gas production, likely by the end of 2015 or early 2016.

Utica second in production increase, first in percentage increase.
The Utica Shale experienced the second overall largest production growth with 2.45 Bcf per day in April 2015, up 1.59 Bcf/day from April 2014. The increase was surpassed only by the Marcellus with showed a whopping 15.24 Bcf per day in April 2015 vs. 12.51 Bcf per day in April 2014, up 2.74 Bcf/day. Though the Utica Shale more than doubled in natural gas production over the last year, and just shy of tripling, holding the distinction of largest (by far) percentage increase.

Utica Shale: Two OH Counties Contributing to Half of all Drilling

According to the May 9, 2015 update from the Ohio DNR, combined, Belmont and Monroe Counties in Southeast Ohio account for nearly half of all Utica Shale wells classified as currently drilling,

Together the two counties are the home of 108 of the 223 wells classified as currently drilling,  and account for 88 of 209 wells permitted so far this year. With drilling costs running into the millions of dollars for each well, drilling activity is a big bet. And following the money is a good indicator of areas that are hot.

Top Utica Shale Drillers Reporting Earnings this Week

A big week coming up
After Antero Resource’s Q1 015 earnings report April 30, a raft of earnings reports are due out this week. Antero reported Utica production up 43% from Q4 2014 to Q1 2015. And also last week, Hess  reported earnings, April 29th, when they announced a reduction in their 2-rig Utica program to a 1-rig program by June. Earnings calls can reveal a great deal and much will be written of what is said.

Earnings reports coming out May 4th week from top Utica Shale players in Ohio include  (Investor page links included)

Chesapeake Energy (May 6th, 8am CT)
Gulfport Energy (May 6th, 8am CT)
Eclipse Resources (May 6th, at market close)
Carrizo (May 6th, 11am)
Rice Energy (May 7th, 9am ET)
PDC Energy (May 7th, 11am ET)

Much should be revealed
After investor calls I’ve found SeekingAlpha.com to be a great place to scan and read call transcripts where much more insight is provided than the earnings report itself.

The earnings announcements should offer additional insights into what we might expect for the year with respect to rig count and activity in the Utica Shale.

Utica Shale Wells Drilling in Ohio as of May 2, 2015

The May 2nd, 2015 report from the Ohio DNR reports 222 wells drilling as of May 2nd, down 31 from 253 reported April 11th. The drop coincides with announced rig reductions by some of the operators.

Ohio Utica Shale Drilling Activity YOY Review

Similar to the most recent post where we evaluated permitting activity in Ohio's Utica Shale (April 25, 2015)  YTD vs. last year, lets have look at Ohio's Utica Shale drilling activity YOY, more of a snapshot but a similar comparison.

April 25th, 2015219 wells classified as "Drilling"
April 19th, 2014, 143 wells classified as "Drilling"

As we can see, activity is still up significantly compared to about this same time last year.

By counties with wells classified as drilling.
As the data below shows, Carroll County saw a significant drop in drilling activity (8 wells drilling April 25th 2015 vs. 30 on April 19th 2014, on higher drilling in general so that is noteworthy. While Monroe drilling activity is up more than 100% from last year (53 in April 2015 vs. 23 in April 2014). Harrison remains about the same, while Guernsey is also up significantly, 31 in April 2015 vs. 11 in April 2014. Belmont is also up, more than 3 fold, 46 in April 2015 vs. 13 in April 2014.

Latest EIA Shale Gas Production Report - Utica Shale Comparison

The February 26, 2015 U.S. EIA Natural Gas report continues to illustrate the sharp rise in Utica Shale natural gas production. The data and diagrams also put some perspective on how the Utica compares with the rest, both in growth and total.

Data below is from the February 26, 2015 EIA Natural Gas Weekly update

Top 9 shale plays by NatGas production (prepared from the EIA data release)
The graph immediately below shows the top 9 shale gas plays by natural gas production. Note the relative obscurity of the Utica Shale, red sliver at the top of the graph, yet seemingly coming out of no where and growing rapidly. The large blue area underneath is of course the Marcellus Shale, the champion of them all. Note also that while the Bakken is a significant oil producer, it does not produce much gas. In contrast, the Eagle Ford, noted for oil production, also produces a significant amount natural gas. Like Utica Shale, the Eagle Ford shale has a fairway that is noted for producing gas and a similar, parallel fairway, producing primarily liquids.

Bottom 4 of 9 plays by NatGas production (prepared from the EIA data release)
Looking at just the bottom 4 of 9 producers (which includes the Utica Shale, again in red), shows how the Utica has comparatively risen to significance necessitating that the EIA include the Utica Shale in its weekly production reports.

Selected Natural Gas Production Decline Analysis, Utica Shale Ohio

A look back at top 5 gas producers from Q1 2014
In an earlier post I selected the top 5 gas producers from Q1 2014 in Ohio's Utica Shale and followed their inevitable production decline through Q2 and Q3.Now that Q4 2014 data is available lets look at how the same wells have continued to perform over time.

Three of the wells showed production of more than 1,000,000 Cubic Feet in Q1 2014. Production in all five wells has declined by more than one-half from Q1 to Q4 2014.

Many of us have seen production decline curves quite steeper than what is shown below, this is only because here we are looking by the quarter. If we had day-to-day data I suspect that production type curves would show the steep decline in early days rather than averaging decline in three-month time spans as below.

The 5 wells did not start producing at the same time
The Gulfport McCort well had its first full quarter of production in Q3 2013 and the Antero Gary Unit 2H well had its full quarter of production in Q4 2013, so we are looking at different points along the production decline curve and the "Production % Sustained" numbers in the first chart below do not reflect a complete decline rate curve and can not be compared directly. The purpose here is to simply show declining production of selected "Top 5" wells from Q1 2014.

And while focusing on the five wells below, it is worth noting that two ECLIPSE wells showed 1,833,001 (19,923/day) and 1,895,281 (20,600) cubic feet of production in Q4 2014. These two remarkable wells will be watched closely for decline rates over time.

Natural Gas Production / Day in Q1 through Q4 2014

(Total % decline in the graph above is based not on total production during the quarter but on production/day during the quarter, taking into account the number of days that a well is listed as producing, which can vary, as noted with the McCort 2-28H well which showed as producing for just 32 days during the three months of the Q2 2014).

The McCort 2-28H well's 32 days of production during Q2 2014 contributed to an abnormally steep decline in total production in the quarters from Q1 to Q2 but understandable given the reduced days producing. The Gary Unit 2H well showed 74 days of production in Q2 and the other three wells showed 90 to 91 days of production in Q2. Q3 and Q4 production days were very similar for all wells.

And while the Antero Gary Unit 2H shows 40% sustained production from Q1 to Q4 (the highest of the five), it is important to note that the well was THE top natural gas producer in Q4 of 2013, showing 1,329,318 Cubic Feet of production (19,840/day on 67 days of production) compared to the 1,115,801 and 12,398/day number for Q1 2014 below. From Q4 2013 to Q3 2013 the well sustained production at 33%. When a well enters production is an important factor given the high initial production decline rates. As a result, the 40% production sustained number is skewed by the fact that we are looking at a production curve that is further along and not as steep as initial decline.

Similarly, McCort 2-28H also showed significant production in Q4 2013 with 792,076 Cubic Feet (9,420/day on 84 days) and 826,255 cubic feet of production in Q3 2013 (9,389/day on 88 days), with only 5 days of production in Q2 2013. So excluding the brief production in Q2 2013, the first four months saw production go from 9,389/day to 5,038/day for a 53% production sustain rate, very high in comparison.

See McCort and Gary Unit wells decline curves below.

Natural Gas Production /Quarter in Q1 through Q4 2014

Again, the McCort 2-28H well produced for only 32 days in Q2, accounting for the steep production decline, which recovers in Q3.

McCort 2-28H and Gary Unit 2H Wells, Decline over time
First chart is production/quarterThe second chart is in production/day which takes into account the fact that the wells were not always in production in certain days = Quarterly production / Days shown as producing

Ohio Utica Shale - Activity Remains Relatively High

While operators look to increasingly focus on the most economic areas in the Ohio Utica Shale, and cutting capital investment projections, activity is still strong historically. Depressed Oil and Gas spot prices lead to increasingly tight economics, or worse, for some wells, though activity is still high in relative terms.

The two graphs below, snapshots six months apart, show permitted wells remaining healthy and drilling up. Wells classified as "drilling" and "drilled" indicate that "producing" wells should about double from August 2014 to August 2015. And with 72 new permits issued from Jan 1, 2015 through Feb  7, 2015, in 10 different Ohio counties, there is ample evidence pointing to relatively high activity to continue.
